Growing Data Collection Challenge In Southern Africa.

Expect the unexpected. A growing data collection challenge in sub-Saharan Africa is no match for our experts.

The challenge:  To retrieve and maintain the data integrity of digital evidence on site in a sub-Saharan capital , on behalf of our legal client.  Speed of response (less than 12 hours’ notice) and agility (the number of devices to collect increased from 3 to 11) were paramount.

With less than 12 hours’ notice, Salient’s team were on the ground in a foreign country by 7.30am to carry out a  forensically sound digital collection on behalf of our client.  Initially, we anticipated collecting the three laptops we’d been instructed on.  On arrival, we discovered that there were actually 11 devices to collect (4 mobile phones and 7 laptops).  From experience, we know that collections have a tendency to expand, so having brought enough equipment and extra hard drives,  we were able to flex to accommodate the changes, and were able to rearrange our team’s logistics to include an overnight stay.  Having collected everything, data under management totalled 4.5 Terabytes.

Our experts are experienced in forensic collection and always have their kit prepared for a fast deployment.  They were careful to establish a clear chain of custody, maintaining data integrity at all times.  We ensured that a master copy was sealed in a tamper-evident bag and created working copies in a format required by the law firm. Processing was carried out over the weekend, so that within two working days of receiving the instruction, our client was able to start work on the investigation.
